Guiding Principles for Equity-Minded Practice: Frequently Asked Questions

How were the GPs developed? Who developed them?

The Guiding Principles emerged from a combination of scholarship on DEIB practice and the ICC's work over the prior year involving numerous discussions with colleagues across campus, and ICC-led meetings with hundreds of staff and faculty helping them to identify their DEIB goals and weaving them into the fabric of their work. In 2021-22, the ICC fine-tuned and tested the Principles in a year-long iterative process culminating in a series of pilot workshops with different campus offices across campus and the DEIB Community of Practice.

Why were they developed?

For many years, many people, offices, departments, and other entities across the University have been doing earnest DEIB work. Too often, however, those efforts have been siloed and disconnected from one another, thereby impeding our collective DEIB progress. One of the ICC's most important roles is to develop tools that can help align campus DEIB efforts toward the long-range, systemic change required to achieve the vision of UR reflected in its commitments. The Guiding Principles for Equity-Minded Practice are the first major resource developed by the ICC.

What is happening with them this year?

In 2022-23, the pilot Guiding Principles for Equity-Minded Practice are available to the campus. As more members of campus practice using the Principles, the more we will learn about how to fine-tune and improve them. People's practical engagement with the Principles will also inform our plans to enhance their usability by supplementing them with a user's manual or other resources, including supplemental guidance on assessing the Principles.

Who should I contact to understand how to best use them?

If you would like additional guidance on applying the principles to your particular work, please contact Dr. Glyn Hughes, director of Institutional Equity & Inclusion and co-chair of the Institutional Coordinating Council.

Where can I share my feedback?

The ICC welcomes feedback on the Principles as we continue to fine-tune this tool for our campus. If you have feedback or questions, please contact Dr. Glyn Hughes, director of Institutional Equity & Inclusion and co-chair of the Institutional Coordinating Council.
